For one term he filled the office of presiding elder during the Civil War and helped enlist the 8th Regiment of the New York Heavy Artillery in 1862. As the 8th Regiment chaplain for three years, after holding pastorates in several large cities he settled in Indianapolis, Indiana and continued his ministerial duties. After his political time he again engaged in preaching as a pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Akron, Ohio, from 1889 until his death in that city.  (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
