Mr. James Dean Spratt of Atlanta died at the age of 86 on November 17, 2005.A native of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, Mr. Spratt attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) and was graduated from the University of Kentucky where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Gama Sigma honor fraternity. During World War II he served with the Army Air Corps, 508th Fighter Group of the Seventh Air Force in the Pacific theatre. He was discharged with the rank of Captain. He retired from Bell South Corporation as Assistant Comptroller having served forty-four years with the Bell System in Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia and four years with AT&T in New York City. He was a graduate of Northwestern University's program for Bell System executives. Always active in the community, Mr. Spratt was a member of the Financial Executives Institute. Following retirement, he served as Business Manager of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens during the construction of the new Garden House. As a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, he was an usher for over thirty years; served on the Administrative Board; was chairman of the Finance Committee; and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School class. After retirement, Mr. Spratt enjoyed a hobby of restoring an abandoned farm and house in North Georgia near Dahlonega. He made many loyal friends who were helpful maintaining it and whom he loved visiting every week. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Margaret Pickett Spratt. A son, James D. Spratt, Jr. and his wife, Susan Turk Spratt; two daughters, Susan Spratt Thomas and her husband, John B. Thomas III, and Nancy Spratt Arnett and her husband, James Arnett. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Dr. John B. Thomas, IV and his wife, Zsuzanna Major Thomas; Dr. Anna Thomas Koeppel and her husband, Daniel Koeppel; Miss Elizabeth Claire Arnett; Miss Sarah Frances Thomas; Miss Margaret Lytle Spratt; Mr. James Edward Arnett; and Mr. James D. Spratt, III; and one great grandson, John B. Thomas, V. Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Park on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church's Chapel on Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Don Harp officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the Hall of the Apostles.
