WHITFIELD, DORIS Ypsilanti, MI Age 94 Went home to be with her Lord on July 3, 2013. She was born August 18, 1918, the daughter of Roy and Jenny Dewitt. She graduated from Stockbridge High School and put herself through Cosmetology school. Doris owned and operated a Beauty Shop in both Stockbridge and Ypsilanti for more than 40 years. During this time, she raised two children and served in the Baptist Church. She also served the Church at large within the Ypsilanti Community and was chosen Woman of the Year by Church Women United.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Orel Whitfield and her siblings, Lester Dewitt and Ila Robeson; and one niece, Carolyn Edstrom. She is survived by her loving children, Terry (Judy) Dreyer of Plymouth and Carole Janean (Michael) Weaver of Colorado; cherished granddaughter, Danielle Yoscovits and three step-grandchildren: Lori (Channing) Smith, Teri (John) Ivaniszyn and Ryan (Jamie) King; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She is also survived by three nephews, Stanley (Judy) Dewitt, Marvin (Charlene) Dewitt, Doug (Madelyn) Robeson and one niece, Marie (Scott) Wagner.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Gentiva Hospice for their support in her final days. Funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ypsilanti, 1110 W. Cross St., Ypsilanti, Michigan, with Pastor Randy Johnson officiating. Contributions in her memory may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 7801 Mesquite Bend Dr., Suite 105, Irving, TX, 75063 or the First Baptist Church of Ypsilanti. Envelopes will be available at Janowiak Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. and at the Church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m.
