Died at Age 77 Years - First Husband Descendant of a Puritan

Mrs Elizabeth Brown died Monday evening July 28 at 9:40 o'clock at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs George Crotty, 96 Wood Avenue, after a long illness. She was 77 years old and was born at Elmira, NY. She came to Michigan in 1856 locating first at Rose, Oakland county where she remained eight years, moving then to Corunna, Mich. She lived there for about thirty years and in 1894 came to Muskegon for residence, since which time she had lived here. She was a descendant of John MacComber, one of the Puritans who came to America in 1620. Her second husband was a cousin of John Brown of Harper's Ferry fame.

The deceased was married twice. Her first husband was Joseph L Travis who died in New York. Her second husband was a minister in the ME church. He had a number of charges in New York, but was retired from active service when he came to Michigan. He died at Corunna thirty-four years ago. Mrs Brown was a woman of kind disposition and had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 60 years, having joined that church when 17 years of age.

She leaves three sisters and a brother, Mrs Abraham McIntyre Carllton, NY; Mrs Frank Acheh, Delevan, NY; Mrs Laura Barton, Grand Rapids, at present spending the summer at Lake Harbor; Henry Gale, Lima, Ohio; three daughters, Mrs HA Stewart, Canton, Minn who has been here the past two weeks on account of the serious illness of her mother; Mrs William Burnett, Pine Street; Mrs GM Burdick, Amity Street; fifteen grand children and three great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 am from the residence, Rev JA DeGraff officiating.
