William Greer Chapel, 71 years old, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2002, from 6 months of lung cancer. His beloved wife, Marge, and son, Donald, were present.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marge; his son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Carmela; and two grandchildren, Katelyn and David Jee. He lost his first son, Benjamin, in 1975 to a train accident.
William Greer Chapel was born April 2, 1931 in Los Angeles, CA to Alice and Franklin Gage Chapel. He had a one year older brother, Franklin Gage Chapel, Jr. He went to UCLA then transferred to UCB his senior year majoring in Civil Engineering. After serving in the Navy for 36 months, he worked in N.Y. at Colgate Palmolive, living in Summit, N.J. There he met and married Margaret Elizabeth Caughey, moved to Plainfield, N.Y.; had a son, Benjamin James, then moved to Roselle, N.J.
Relocating to Walnut Creek, CA, he worked for Fiberboard Paper Corporation; had another son, Donald William. Fiberboard changed to Louisiana Pacific. They joined the Unitarian Universalist Church in 1969 and became very active. Bill became the chair of the Board of Trustees, chair of the Denominational Affairs Committee, Dean and facilitator of the annual Pacific Central District Leadership School, and Dean of the Stebbins Institute at Asilomar, among other things.
He and his wife are extremely grateful for the love, support and help from their church family, the Wellness Community and Walnut Creek Kaiser Hospice.
Memorial Services will be held at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek, on Saturday, December 21 at 1:00 p.m. Phone (925) 9345-3135 for directions.
