Edward Marshall Compton, Springfield, retired coal dealer and former transfer businessman, died yesterday at Memorial hospital where he had been a medical patient since March 11. He was 78 years old. Mr. Compton was born March 8, 1866, in Alton, and had resided in Springfield 44 years. On Oct. 21, 1903, he married Clara G. Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at the Vancil funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Clara G.; one brother, William, St. Louis, Mo., and several nieces and nephews.
