Victor Amadeus of Savoy, only child of Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy, and his second wife Marie Jeanne of Savoy, was born at the Royal Palace of Turin in Italy. After the death of his father in 1675, his mother assumed power as regent. King Louis XIV of France arranged his marriage to Anne Marie d'Orléans. The proxy marriage took place on April 10, 1684 in Versailles. The couple met for the first time on May 6th, the day of their wedding in Savoy. That year, Victor Amadeus also ended the regency of his mother. He undertook sweeping administrative and military reforms in Savoy. Under his mother's regency, Savoy had been closely allied with France. The duke allied himself against France during two wars. Following the War of the Spanish Succession, he was made King of Sicily under the Treaty of Utrecht. However, in 1720, he was forced to exchange Sicily for Sardinia. Victor Amadeus was widowed in 1728. His marriage with Anne Marie had produced eight children. They included Marie Adélaïde who gave birth to the future Louis XV, and Maria Luisa who became Queen of Spain. He had also fathered at least two illegitimate children. The king married a former mistress in 1730, and abdicated the throne that year. He was succeeded by his son Charles Emmanuel III. Victor Amadeus II died at the Castle of Rivoli in Turin in 1732 and was interred at the Basilica of Superga.
