George Tiffany, 78, Active Churchman Retired Lawyer, Elected to Assembly in 1897 Was Kracke Associate
George Tiffany of 178 Hawthorne St., retired lawyer, former Assemblyman and active church worker, died yesterday in a local hospital after an illness of about ten days. He was 78.
Identified for many years with the work of the Flatbush Reformed Church, Church and Flatbush Aves., Mr. Tiffany also had served as a member of the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America and secretary treasurer of Its board of directors.
Mr. Tiffany was elected to the State Assembly in 1897 from the 18th A. D. on the Republican and Cltizens Union ticket. His district included the greater part of the old Flatbush section. The following year he was defeated for re-election by Henry A. Ball, Democrat.
For a number of years he was associated in Republican politics In Flatbush with Frederick J. H. Kracke, now Commissioner of Assessors and former Republican leader in the 2lst A. D.
Family in U. S. in 1630
Born in Schenectady, N. Y., on July 23, 1859, Mr. Tiffany was a descendant of Capt. John Underhill, a Quaker who went from Holland to Boston in 1630 and later was renown as an Indian fighter, having been one of the first to overcome the power of the Indians on Long Island.
Mr. Tiffany was graduated from the Albany Law School in 1885. For a time he was a partner in the law firm of Estes, Barnard & Tiffany here, which he left to form the firm of Tiffany & Brush, with offices at 350 Fulton St.
His wife, who was Eliza Estes, died in February, 1915. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Marguerite Tiffany, and a son, George B. Tiffany. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Flatbush Reformed Church by the Rev. J. Frederic Berg, the pastor.
