Hampton- Lyle Hawthorne, 66, of 277 La Salle Ave., died Monday in Hampton general Hospital. He was born in Pennaman. He had been employed with Poquoson Motors. He was retired from the army after 20 years of service and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. He served as chairman of the Elizabeth City-County Hampton-Phobeus Recreation Association. He also served as district athletic officer of the American Legion and as commander of American Legion Post No. 31. He received the Fraternal Order of Eagels service award for exceptional service in civic affairs and served as director for the Division of War Veterans Claims. He also was appointed to the area committee on veteran re-employment rights for the Department of Labor. He also received the Peninsula Junior Chamber Commerce Award for outstanding community service. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Jean McCaig Roser, two sons, Lyle H. Rosser of Orange, Calif., John I. Rosser of Hampton; his mother Mrs. Inez Hawthorne Rosser of Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Ayers and Mrs. Lillian Moore, obth of Hampton; two brothers Dois Rosser, Jr., of Hampton and the Rev. Aubrey Rosser of Richmond. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Logan of Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
