LULA FINNELL
Funeral services for Lula Finnell will be 11 a.m. Friday at Berry Funeral Home in Keytesville.
Lula Fultz Finnell was born Nov. 23, 1899 in Leeton. She was one of five children of Charles and Effie Patrick Fultz. At age 13 her family moved to Chetopa, KS. It was there that at age 15 that Lula became a member of the Presbyterian Church and at 18 she graduated from high school.
In 1919, Mrs. Finnell went to Kansas City to attend Huff's Business College and from there to a position in the medical department of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where she held that position for 13 years. During that time she met Dred Finnell, a lengthy friendship developed and many weekends were spent in Dred's hometown with his mother and many friends. They were married Dec. 7, 1923, in the home of Rev. Burris Jenkins in Kansas City.
Mr. Finnell always had a desire to return to his hometown when he retired so in 1952, they returned to Keytesville. He built their first home, and immediately became interested in the affairs of the town. Mrs. Finnell who had lived in the city since she left home, found it fascinating to live in a small town again and to have a garden and flowers. She had spent many years working in different organizations, as the worthy matron in the Eastern Star in 1941 and queen in the White Shrine of Jerusalem which she had to give up when they moved here. She became active in the Presbyterian Church as long as she had a pastor. After the church closed she continued to study her Bible and many other religious publications which she received.
Surviving are one sister, Gladys Harding of Los Angeles, CA; and several nieces and nephews of Kansas City and close friends, Eddie and Marie Eberle of Keytesville; Norman and Judy Bentley of Keytesville and Betty Hayes of Keytesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dred, on March 15, 1988; two brothers, Cecil Fultz and J. C. Fultz, and one sister, Goldie Barker.
Burial will be in the Asbury Cemetery. Rev. Gretchen Williams will officiae.
Memorials may be made to the Asbury Cemetery.
