Marian Axtman, 82, Minot, formerly of Rugby, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at ManorCare Health Services in Minot.

Marian E. Burckhard was born Oct. 30, 1929, a daughter of Frank and Caroline (Black) Burckhard, in Rugby. She was raised on the family farm with her siblings and educated at the Gorman Township County School.

Marian married Victor F. Axtman on July 7, 1948, at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Fulda, where she also played the organ for masses. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm 13 1/2 miles southwest of Rugby and she assisted her husband with the daily operations of the farm. In 1950, she had a brain tumor removed in Rochester, Minn.

In 1974, they moved to Rugby. She worked at Hamilton Motel and Cornerstone Cafe there for a time. In 2004, they moved to Brentmoor Assisted Living in Minot, and following a stroke in 2009, she moved to ManorCare Health Services in Minot.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was one of the first in the Rugby area to own an electric Singer sewing machine and loved to sew, making some wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses and other clothes. She also made many quilts and crocheted afghans for her girls and grandchildren.

She loved baking, cooking, gardening, word searches, scrapbooking, and playing cards with friends and family. She had a great love for music, and would often play without the musical notes. She could play the organ, harmonica, accordion, spoons, and electric keyboard.

She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Minot. She was a former member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby and of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Balta, where she was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.

Her loving family includes: husband of 63 years, Victor, Minot; daughters, Jane (James) Jundt, Minot, and Charlotte (Lester) Getzlaff, Williston; grandchildren, Jim Jundt Jr., Twyla (Bryan) Renner, Brent (Jennifer) Jundt, Angela (Jeff) Braaten, Glenn Getzlaff and Corey (Cindy) Getzlaff; great-grandchildren, Chauntel, Ethan, Anthony, Randy, Jenna, Lilly, Tyler, Kianna, Corbin, Colton, Corey, and Carson; sisters, Barbara Schell, Minot; sisters-in-law, Lucille Burckhard, Minot, Anne Burckhard, Minot, and Virginia Koble, Rugby; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Mike (Mary), Peter (Isabelle), Fabian, and John Burckhard; sisters, Margaret (Mike) Mosser and Theresa (Peter) Miller; and brothers-in-law, Peter Schell and Casper Koble.

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at 10 a.m., in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
