Dr. Zacharia, M.D. was born 11 Feb 1832 in Herbstein, Voglebergkreis, Hessen, Germany, the son of Joseph TRAUD and Genevieve MARCHAND. Zacharias trained as a physician in Germany and it is said that he cared for the father of Kaiser Wilhelm before coming to the USA.

Zacharias married Franziska STAUBBACH in about 1856 in Herbstein, and at least (7) children were born to this union.

Zacharias and his young family arrived 27 Oct 1865 in the Port of New York on the S.S. Hansa; H.J. Saten, Master; from Bremen, Germany, via Southampton, England. Ths S.S. Hansa had first been launched 23 Aug 1861; 2,992 tons, clipper bow, 1 funnel, 3 masts, iron construction, one screw, speed 11.5 knots. The ship's manifest includes Zacharias 33 listed as a farmer, wife Franziska 30, daughter Constance 8, son Maxmilian 6, and Elizabeth 10 months, all from Herbstein.

In 1870 census, Zachary is found still practicing medicine in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky. After his death in 1878, his children lived with his mother Genevieve.
