"Last Saturday afternoon one more of the early settlers and pioneers was called away to the great beyond. George Bastian, well known by every body, died of old age in his home near Fort Ridgely at an age of 81 years.
Deceased was born Sept. 2nd 1828 near Strassburg, Germany and in 1846, when 18 years old, came to America, making Seneca, N. Y. his first home. Twelve years later, in 1858 he left New York state and came to Minnesota settling down near Fort Ridgely. Mr. Bastian was married in 1854 to Miss Theresa Waldburger, who with the followiug children survives him: Geo. J. Bastian, Fort Ridgely Mrs. L. P. Bushard, West Newton, Mrs. Joe Gleisner, Henry P.
Bastian, New Ulm Mrs. M. Dummer,West Newton Wm. Bastian, Fort Ridgely and John Bastian, New Ulm.
The funeral was held Monday morning from the family residence and the remains were laid to rest in St. George
cemetery. Mr. Bastian was an honest, upright, bard working man and of a type that evidences those sterling
pioneer-qualities by which the wilderness was changed into a paradise."
