Scherer, Douglas (13 SEP 1942 - 17 MAR 1960)
Two Dorchester high school seniors were killed early Thursday morning when the car in which they were riding went out of control and rolled over on Highway 13, about two miles north of Abbotsford.
Killed were Douglas Scherer, who was born here September 13, 1942, and Marlene Pecher, both 17. They were riding in a car driven by Wayne Underwood, 16, also of Dorchester, who escaped with minor injuries.
Underwood told authorities his car went out of control when it skidded on an icy patch at about 2:30 last Thursday morning.
The car was reported to have broken off a telephone pole and a length of fence and rolled over several times, coming to rest in a field on the east side of the highway, in Marathon county.
All three of the occupants were thrown clear of the car. Scherer was declared dead at the scene of the accident, and Miss Pecher and Underwood were taken to St. Joseph’s hospital, Marshfield, where Miss Pecher died at about 7 that morning. Underwood was treated and released that same morning.
Douglas Scherer was the son of Mrs. Evelyn Scherer of Dorchester and Francis Scherer of Spencer. Funeral services were held Monday at the Fuchsgruber Funeral Home at Dorchester, with the Rev. Harold Welch, pastor of the Salem Evangelical United Brethren church officiating.
He is also survived by a brother, Allen, and a sister, Mrs. James (Barbara) Mercer.
Miss Pecher was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Pecher, who live just east of Dorchester on county trunk A. Funeral services were held for her Monday at St. Louis Catholic church, Dorchester, with the Rev. Gerald Schuh officiating.
