Motion Picture Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Actor. Best known for the steamy picture "Nine 1/2 Weeks" (1986) and the "Red Shoe Diaries" series. Born Zalman Lefkovitz in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of an oral surgeon, he tried a career as a deep sea diver, prior to taking a liking to acting. Initially, he found minor parts beginning with his TV debut in the series "The Alfred Hitchcock Show" (1964), followed by "Gunsmoke" and "Daniel Boone", among others. He had a featured role playing Aaron Silverman in "The Young Lawyers" (1969 to 1971), for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination in 1971. During the 1970s, he advanced to features with the independent film "The Ski Bum" (1971) and later "Some Call It Love" (1973) and "The Passover Plot" (1976). During the 1980s, he turned to directing beginning with "Two Moon Junction" (1988) and followed this with "Wildfire" (1988) and "Wild Orchid" (1989). He may perhaps be best known for his co-penning of the erotic "Nine 1/2 Weeks" (1986, also produced) which marked a successful writing partnership with his wife Patricia Knop. He was the father of screenwriter Chloe King and film photographer Gillian Lefkowitz. He died from cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
