DEATH CLAIMS COUNTY WOMAN 108 YEARS OLD

Mrs. Julia Garski of Polonia, Who Could Thread Needle Without Glasses, Dies

Mrs. Julia Garski, aged 108, Portage county's oldest resident, died at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leo Grocholski, at Polonia. Since the death of her husband more than 10 years ago, Mrs. Garski had been making her home with her daughters. She had been ailing during the past nine months, but although her illness gradually became more serious, she did not become extremely feeble.

Her memory and hearing were good and only a short time ago she was able to thread a needle and to sew without glasses. She attended mass at Sacred Heart church at Polonia every morning up to two years ago, and until her illness was able to help her daughters with the housework.

Birth Year 1823

Mrs. Garski was born in Poland in the early nineteenth century. While there are no records of her birth, it is believed by relatives that Mrs. Garski was born in 1823. Her maiden name was Julia Konopacki. She was married in the old country to Mr. Walashek, who died about 60 years ago, and she later married John Garski with whom she came to this country more than a half century ago. They settled in Polonia and lived in that neighborhood the rest of their lives, mostly on small farms which they cultivated themselves. For some time previous to six years ago Mrs. Garski boarded children attending the parochial school at Polonia.

Five Generations

Surviving are one son, Frank Walashek, 711 Union street, and four daughters, Mrs. Grocholski, Mrs. Martin Schulist and Mrs, Frank Omernik of the town of Sharon and Mrs. John Lubetski of the town of Stockton. Her descendants are numerous and reach to the fifth generation with Jean Bukolt, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roman Bukolt, 519 North Second street, who ia a great great granddaughter.

Funeral Saturday

The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock at Sacred Heart church and interment will take place in Sacred Heart cemetery. The body is at the Grocholski home.

Funeral of Mrs. Garski

Many old friends and relatives attended the funeral of Mrs. Julia Garski, aged 108 years, at Sacred Heart church at Polonia this morning. Rev. Leo Jankowski officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery.

Pallbearers were six grandsons of Mrs. Garski, Frank, Ed, Ernest, Joseph, Ferdinand and Henry Grocholski, the latter two of Milwaukee. Alice and Grace Grocholski of Milwaukee and Irene Grocholski were in charge of flowers. Members of the Rosary society attended the services in a body.

In addition to relatives from Milwaukee, there were numerous friends and relatives at the funeral from the vicinity of Polonia, where Mrs. Garski lived for more than 50 years.

**NOTE** On her husband John Garski's gravestone, on the bottom, it says JULIANNA GARSKA
UR 1 CZER 1835
which means she was born 1 June 1835, which would have made her 96 years old at the time of her death. Perhaps the family found her birth records after her death. There is an empty grave stone base next to John's, but no stone.
