He was born either in York County or in Schaefferstown, Lebanon County - both are reported - but his obituary claims Lebanon County. In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg May 7, 1864, and mustered into federal service May 12 as a private with Co. D, 184th Pennsylvania Infantry. A clerk heard him pronounce his last name "Archart" and wrote that on the roster. The name stuck, and all his military and pension records are under that spelling, but it is also seen as "Earhart." He was wounded in the left knee by a shell fragment at the battle of Cold Harbor June 3, 1864, hospitalized at Satterlee U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, then transferred to Filbert Street U.S. Hospital, Philadelphia, where he was discharged the service by surgeon's certificate to date May 3, 1865.
He married Annie M. N. Buch June 19, 1866, in Lancaster and fathered Wilson (b. 04/05/67), John (b. 10/14/69), Katie (b. 09/12/71), and Walter (b. 09/24/81). In 1890, he was living in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, and shortly thereafter relocated to Lititz. The knee wound never properly healed, but he died from hemorrhaging following prostate surgery at Lancaster General Hospital.
During his pension process, he didn't seem to know if he had been born on June 10 or 11 or if the year was 1839 or 1840 but finally settled on the birth date you see here, one he claimed came from the family bible.
