"Lucy Brown, 1920, Part Yosemite"
Wife of Bill Brown & mother of Johnny Brown.
Estimated to have been born in the early 1830s.
She was a very popular subject of photographers & a gifted basket weaver.
LUCY BROWN (AKA: Lucy Sam) with her great-granddaughter, Alice. Lucy Brown, or Indian Lucy, was said to be nearly 120 at the time of her death. She was one of the last of the original Indians who had been found in Yosemite Valley at the time of its discovery by white men in 1851. She was one of the last full-blooded Indians of the Yosemite tribe. Her husband was Bill Brown or Mono Tom as he was called. She was in the Yosemite Valley when it was discovered in 1851. Lucy was the oldest of six generations of the Brown family, many of whom lived most of their lives in Yosemite. Both Lucy and Bill are buried in the Yosemite cemetery.
