José Pedro Juan de los Angeles Chapman y Ortega was born at Los Angeles, Alta California, México, and baptized at Mission San Gabriel August 2, 1825 (SG Baptisms 07340, ECPP). He was the son of José Juan (Joseph John) Chapman and Guadalupe Ortega y Sánchez. His mother was the grand-daughter of Captain Francisco Ortega. He married Josefa Antonia Villa y Váldez at Mission San Gabriel September 1, 1844 (SG Marriages 01980, ECPP). José and his wife appear at Los Angeles in the 1852 California Census and 1860 U.S. Census. He died at Los Angeles in October (or November) 1866, and was buried in the old Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles. When the old Calvary Cemetery closed, he was reinterred at Woodlawn Cemetery by his youngest daughter Senida, who was then buried beside him. --- Other Children: - María Guadalupe de Talpa.
