Oscar Maurits Matson
9/9/1922 -1/17/2011

Oscar Maurits Matson died at home January 17th, 2011, of natural causes.

Oscar was well known in the Redding region for his years of teaching German and for his development of the first local commercial winery. In both of these endeavors his gregarious personality and charm attracted many friends, and he leaves behind a large number of students who were influenced by his outgoing approach to languages. Oscar never met a person he did not like, and others responded in kind.

Born in the foothills of San Diego County on September 9, 1922, Oscar completed his education at University of California, Berkeley, where he met his wife, Stella, while serving breakfast in the cooperative cafeteria. Oscar and Stella were married in 1946. After a short time in Madera, Oscar and Stella moved to Redding in 1950 so that Oscar could join the founding faculty of Shasta College. He taught various languages at Shasta College which were notable for their effectiveness and fun. In 1959, The Matson family (Oscar and Stella and four young boys) spent a year in Germany on a Fulbright exchange, a year that expanded Oscar's circle of friends and added many anecdotes and songs to his classes in German.

In 1984, Oscar retired from Shasta College to give his attention fully to a new interest: winemaking. Oscar and Stella had already planted the beginning of a vineyard on their property, and they then created Matson Vineyards through hours of hard work. The vineyard became the location for numerous "crush" parties, where food, wine and laughter were available to all.

Oscar is preceded in death by Stella and son Gary and granddaughter Angela. He leaves behind sons Mark, Brian and Roger; daughters-in-law Joy, Nancy and Keiko; grandchildren Clea Matson and partner Kenny Gray, Emily Matson Rangel and husband Lazaro, James Matson and wife Ginger, and Erika Matson; and great-grandchildren Yleana Rangel, Marisol Rangel and Zechariah Matson. He also leaves behind two special friends, Diane Hawthorne and Joan Siddens.

The family is very grateful for the work of the special caregivers who came to the house over the last year and allowed him to be independent to the end.

A memorial service is being planned for later in the spring.

Gifts in lieu of flowers can be made to the Shasta Natural Science Scholarship, in care of the Shasta Regional Community Foundation (www.shastarcf.org), or to local charities in his memory.
