Scottish Monarch. The son of Alexander II and Marie de Coucy, he succeeded his father in 1249 at the age of 8. Two years later he was married to Princess Margaret, daughter of Henry III of England. In 1261, he began negotiations with the Norse king Haakon to regain control of the Isles. During the ensuing campaign, he annexed the Isle of Man under the Scottish Crown, and in 1266, the Treaty of Perth secured the Isles under Scottish rule. His queen Margaret died in 1275, and he married Yolande of Dreux in 1285. In early 1286, after a long council and much drinking, he was anxious to return to his new bride eight miles away in Kinghorn. Although urged not to make the journey at night with foul weather approaching, he rode off. He was found dead the next morning, a mile from Kinghorn, his neck broken from a fall from his horse. He was 45. His two sons having died, he was succeeded by his granddaughter Margaret, the Maid of Norway. (bio by: VampireRed)
