| Birth: | Aug. 24, 1198 | | Death: | Jul. 8, 1249 | Scottish Monarch. The son of William I the Lion and Ermengarde de Beaumont, he was crowned on December 5, 1214. He took advantage of King John's problems with his barons and invaded Northern England. John's northern Barons swore fealty and homage to Alexander, though upon John's death in 1217, he lost their loyalty to the new English king, Henry III. To cement good relations, Alexander married Henry III's sister Joan in 1221. Joan died in 1238, and he then married Marie de Coucy in 1239. They had only one child, Alexander. He then turned his attention to consolidating his power over the more remote regions of the country. At the time of his death at the age of 51, only the Lordship of the Isles remained outside of Scottish influence. (bio by: VampireRed)
