BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PETERSON , died at his home in the north part of the city on Wednesday night, December 12, 1928...having attained the extreme age of 88 years, 9 months and 6 days. He leaves a large group of relatives and friends to miss his familiar form upon the streets. Benjamin Franklin Peterson, son of Benj. A. and Bethelinda Peterson, was born in Clark county, Ohio, March 7, 1840. When he was six months old his parents moved with their family to what is now Barry, Ill. Benjamin was the third of fourteen children. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of Barry. In 1861 he enlisted in Company D, 64th Illinois Regiment of Volunteers. He served for three years in the campaigns around Corinth, Missionary Ridge and Kennesaw mountains, later going with Sherman in his famous march from Atlanta, Ga., to the sea. He was twice wounded. He carried a bullet in his leg for many years until it became troublesome and had to be removed. At the end of his enlistment period he reenlisted and served until the end of the war. After his honorable discharge from the army he returned to Illinois and married and lived for several years near Barry. The lure of the West called him to the frontiers of Kansas and Nebraska where he spent forty years of his life. Returning to Illinois he came to Barry, where eight years ago he married Mrs. Alice Askew, who survives him. He leaves the following children by former marriages: L. C. Peterson near Salt Lake, Utah, Mrs. Rhoda Prettiman and Mrs. Cleo Potter, Mulberry, Kansas. There are two step children, Mrs. Lucy Hornback, Barry and Perry Askew of St. Louis, Mo. and two brothers and a sister also survive him, Matthew Peterson of Chicago, Ill., Bruce Peterson and Mrs. Mattie Smith of Barry, Ill. Brother Peterson had long been interested in religion. He had been for many years a member of the Methodist Church and during his days in the West used his talents as a local Methodist Preacher. The funeral services were held from the Barry Funeral Home...Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15, with Rev. C. W. Hammond pastor of Barry M.E. Church officiating. Interment was made in the Park Lawn Cemetery of Barry. The American Legion rendered military honors at the grave.
