Verna Dyne Cheney Busch passed away on Tuesday evening, January 24, 2012 in the Stillwater Medical Center, one day shy of her 88th birthday.
Verna was born January 25, 1924 in Hutchison, Kansas to Lewie Vern Cheney and Carrie Belle Bushman Cheney. She was one of nine children. She graduated from Braman High School in 1943 and attended a teacher's college in Kansas. Then following a pen-pal courtship during World War II, she was united in marriage to Paul Alfred Busch of Ripley, OK. They married in the First Presbyterian Church in Wellington, Kan. on Dec. 28, 1945 and remained married until Paul's death on Dec. 3, 2007.
She was a homemaker, raising four children. Active with the OSU Extension Service homemakers program, she was a first-rate cook and seamstress, often winning first place honors at the Payne County and Oklahoma State Fairs for her canning, baking, and sewing. Verna was an active 4-H leader in Cushing and Payne County and a community volunteer serving as a Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Cushing and supporting her children's activities at Hillside Elementary, and Cushing middle and high schools. She was a loving and proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Verna and Paul lived in Cushing from 1946 until 1981 when they built a home outside of Ripley on a farm homesteaded by Paul's grandparents in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. Verna lived there until the summer of 2010 when she moved to Red Bud Assisting Living Center in Perkins. The staff and residents there became like a second family to her, providing great joy and companionship.
Survivors include her three sons, Paul "Al" Busch Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, of Tulsa, Dennis Busch and his wife, Christy, of Tulsa, and Randy Busch of Perkins; one daughter, Diana Hartley and her husband, Tim, of Norman; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren; one brother, Kenny Cheney of Perry; one sister-in-law, Ruth Cheney of Lawton, OK; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carolyn Jean and infant son, Michael Lind; sisters Rowena Atkinson, Tressa Malcolm and Betty Adams; and brothers Chester, Lewie Jr., Melvin, and Edwin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 28 at the Mehan Union Church with Pastor Larry Eslinger, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery north of Ripley.
