| Birth: | Nov. 26, 1930 Providence Providence County Rhode Island, USA | | Death: | Jan. 24, 2012 West Palm Beach Palm Beach County Florida, USA | Rhode Island Governor. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the state of Rhode Island's governor from 1977 to 1985. The son of Irish immigrants, he attended the University of Rhode Island and later the University of Buffalo (without graduation) and served with the US Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he worked as a salesman for a Rhode Island brewing company. His interest in politics was sparked when he worked locally for the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy and in 1962, Garrahy was elected to Rhode Island's State Senate (1963 to 1969), later serving as the state's lieutenant governor from 1969 to 1977. During his governorship, he prioritized straightening out difficulties with the state's prison system and showed a strong determination to revitalize the downtown Providence-area. Garrahy may perhaps be best remembered for leading coordination efforts during the blizzard of 1978. After leaving office, he served as a business consultant. (bio by: C.S.)
