Charles R. Kissel, 88, died at 8:45 a.m. Jan. 23, 2012, at Lima Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Lima to Charles R. and Lena Otto Kissel, who preceded him in death. On June 22, 1947, he married Pauleen M. Stump, who died Feb. 13, 2010.

Mr. Kissel was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the 40th Bomb Group, 11th Photo Lab, from 1943 to 1945. It was his job to take photos of the radar screen while they flew over "the hump" — the Himalayas — between India and China. The aerial photos were then used by pilots coming in behind them to bomb sites on the ground. He was one of only three remaining corpsman from his unit. He was a carpenter by trade, a bit of an inventor and a jack-of-all-trades. He was a lifelong resident of Bath Township and was one of the founding members of the Bath Township Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief from 1967 to 1974. He will be greatly missed by everyone at Fat Jack's Pizza.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda (David) Boyles, of Lima, Ann (Dave) Bush, of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Sue (Chuck) Nichols, of Grizzly Flats, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, George Stump, who was his lifelong best friend, and Harry (Diane) Baber; 10 grandchildren, Richard (Kimberly) Kipp, Jason Pitz, Nicholas (Ashley) Boyles, Gregory (Tessa) Boyles, Michael Frueh, Julie (Troy) Lieurance, Leah (Jon) Ford, Melissa Stuber, Jené Frueh and Katherine Frueh; 11 great-grandchildren, Ashley and Anthony Kipp, Evelyn Boyles, Tripp Lieurance, Cassie Stuber, Isaih Foster, Haley, Wyatt and Olivia Frueh, and Cadance and Kira Kelly; and his faithful friend, his dog Miles.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Frueh and Jeannie Pitz Dhayer; and a sister-in-law, Doris Stump.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. Linda Boyles, his daughter, will lead the services. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035 and the Army Honor Guard
