For six seasons (1948 to 1953), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals. Born Clifford Day Chambers, he was raised in Washington where he attended Bellingham High School and played collegiate baseball at Washington State University, while attaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Cubs in 1942, his career yielded to his service with the US Air Force during World War II. He marked his Major League debut with the Cubs on April 24th, 1948 and pitched in 29 games that year, prior to being acquired by the Pirates. Over the next two seasons, Chambers was within Pittsburgh's starting rotation (dealt to the Cardinals during the 1951 season) and produced three consecutive double-digit win years, including his career high 14 victories in 1951. On May 6th, 1951 while with the Pirates, Chambers yielded a no-hit game against the Boston Braves (3 to 0 in Boston). In 189 regulars season games, he compiled a 48 win 53 loss record with a 4.29 lifetime ERA in 897 innings pitched. Following his playing career, he worked in the insurance industry. (bio by: C.S.)
