Howard Downey, 85, 902 Oakland Ave., died at 2:42 a.m. Sunday at Jeffersonian Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30p.m. Wednesday, at Myers-Baril Chapel, with the Rev. Larry R. Bailey officiating.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
Mr. Downey was born June 28, 1893, in Marlow, the son of Edward and Nancy (Marlow) Downey.
On September 10, 1917, at Mt. Vernon, he married Grace Decker, who preceded him in death Dec. 15, 1963.
Early in the 1920's Mr. Downey started at the old Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Co. as timekeeper. He later became chief estimator and served in that capacity under the H.K. Porter Co. and Pressed Steel Co. until the firm closed in 1954.
He supervised materials and estimates on domestic and foreign railroad cars which were built in Mt. Vernon.
He was later employed by the Illinois Employment Service.
Mr. Downey was a member of the First United Methodist Church, of the Elks Lodge 819, and he was past commander of American Legion Post 141 and of the Knight's Templar.
He was a W.W. I veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Downey is survived by one son, James Howard Downey of Creve Couer, Mo.; one daugher, Mrs. Bryan (Virginia) Epperson of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Henry Downey of Opdyke; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three nephews; and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Mary Sue; and one sister, Aline Puckett.
