Chester L. Beisser was the son of Cleo L. and Florence Bell Beisser of Zanesville, Ohio. In the 1930 Federal Census he had five siblings who were: Ralph, Marion, Mildred, Dorothy and Blanche. He graduated from Philo High School with the class of 1942. Chester enlisted in the U. S. Army on January 23, 1943, serving during World War II and was a member of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was transferred overseas in 1944 and on June 9, 1945 he was declared missing in action and was never located. For his actions at that time he was post-humously awarded the Bronze Star Medal which is given for "heroic or meritorious achievement or service not involving participation in aerial flight." In addition, he was awarded the Purple Heart for the loss of his life. (Source: WWII & Korean Conflict Veterans Interred Overseas, National Archives and Records Administration)
