Mollie and Robert Collier were very much like stepparents to Nathan M. Shumate's three girls. The Shumate girls, Mai Belle, Virginia, and Louise lost their mother Maggie Adams in 1896 and their father Nathan Shumate in 1899. Virginia Shumate married James Henderson Moran III.

Crab Orchard Loses Good Citizen
Crab Orchard lost one of its best citizens Tuesday when former Mayor Robert L. Collier died in the London Hospital after an illness of some duration. He had lived in and around Crab Orchard all of his long and useful life and was a valuable citizen. During his regime as mayor he did splendid work for his city, improvement of streets and water works standing out most in bold relief. Some years ago he lost his wife and his decline had been noticeable since. No children are left to enjoy the heritage of the good name he left. He loved his home town of Crab Orchard and made it a better place in which to live by being a good citizen of the little city. Peace to his ashes. Our Crab Orchard letter gives particulars on his life and death.
