Samuel Sumner Abernathy, called "Sumner" (his middle name, and coming from his mother's maiden name), was the son of Dr. Jesse Jones and Susan Elizabeth (Sumner) Abernathy. He was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee on February 3, 1860, moving shortly thereafter to Alto, Franklin County, Tennessee. He showed up in the 1870 Census, age 10, living with his family in Alto. His trail was lost for a while, but he was mentioned in a letter dated August 30, 1881 from his father to his first cousin as living in Texas. He was found again in the 1920 and 1930 Census records of Winston, Broadwater County, Montana. Census records report his occupation as farming, and his death certificate reports his occupation as mining. He was never married. Samuel Sumner Abernathy died March 4, 1937 in Broadwater County Hospital in Townsend, Broadwater County, Montana.

Funeral Services for Sumner Abernathy --

Funeral services for Sumner Abernathy, 77, who passed away at the county hospital last Thursday morning, were held from the Connors Mortuary at 2:00 Saturday afternoon after having received word from a sister, Mrs. Bell, of Montrose, Colorado, his only living relative and who was unable to come for the services. Rev. A. O. France officiated over the religious rites. Burial was made in Centerville Cemetery.

Note: Based on the information contained in his obituary, Samuel Sumner Abernathy's funeral arrangements were probably handled by one of his two surviving sisters in Montrose, Montrose County, Colorado. His obituary states "... after having received word from Mrs. Bell, of Montrose, Colorado, his only living relative ..." He was actually survived by two full sisters, Susan Elizabeth (Abernathy) Bell, wife of John Calhoun Bell, and Ida (Abernathy) Bell, wife of Jesse Harrison Bell. Both sisters resided in Montrose, Montrose County, Colorado. He was also survived by one half-brother and two half-sisters: Alfred Abernathy of Miami, Florida; Anesta (Abernathy) Glovier, wife of Monte Glovier, of Valle Cruces, North Carolina, and Eleanor (Abernathy) Crawford, wife of Byrd Crawford, of Sebring, Florida.
