Born in Reading, Pennslyvainia, he was a third baseman making his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on September 23, 1941. For nine seasons, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1941-49), was a member of three Cardinals' World Series Championships (1942, 1944, 1946) and was selected to the National League All-Star team five times (1943-47). He concluded his career with a record of 518 runs scored, 925 hits, 106 home runs, 529 runs batted in and a .286 batting average. After his playing career ended, he managed in the minor leagues for eighteen years. He died at age 81 in Sinking Spring, Pennslyvainia and is a member of the National Polish-American Hall of Fame.
