John A. Forepaugh was the son of George W. Forepaugh and nephew of Adam Forepaugh, the circus owner. As a young man he spent time in various capacities of circus management. Later he managed the Forepaugh Theatre in Philadelphia, having taken over from his uncle in the late 1880s. He transformed it into a live drama theater and organized a resident acting company to complement groups that played there on their way through Philadelphia. The Forepaugh Stock Company debuted in April 1893 and ultimately disbanded in 1907.
