Architect. After studying mathematics in Göttingen and Achitecture in Munich, from 1826 to 1830 he lived in Paris, where he became a student of Franz Christian Gau. From 1830 to 1833 he traveled through Italy and Greece. After his return he became Professor of Architecture in Dresden and was appointed director of the Royal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in 1834. He built the first Opera House in Dresden where Richard Wagner’s Opera “Rienzi” had a successful premiere. It burned down in 1869, was replaced later and now wears Semper’s name. He also built the Art Gallery as the fourth side of the Dresden Zwinger and the Dresden Synagogue which burned in November 1938 and was totally destroyed in 1945. Semper and his friend Richard Wagner took part in the revolt of May 1849 in Dresden. On July 22 they were dismissed from work and fled the kingdom. Wagner fled to Switzerland and Semper to London. In 1855 he became Professor of Architecture in Zurich. During his time in Zurich he designed the Burgtheater in Vienna. In 1876 he moved to Italy and died three years later in Rome.
