The daughter of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and Louisa of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, she married William, Duke of Clarence on July 11, 1818. William was over 20 years her senior, and already had a large brood of illegitimate children by his long-time mistress, actress Dorothy Jordan. Crowned on September 8, 1831, the couple had five children, none of whom survived infancy. Adelaide was popular with the people for her modesty and her tragic childbirth history. She was also very generous to charity, donating at least a third of her income to worthy causes. She survived William by only 12 years, and died at Bentley Priory at the age of 57. The city of Adelaide, Australia was named in her honor.
