Daughter of James Evans who was born in Liverpool, England in 1796, lived in Sandbach, Cheshire, England and died there on Nov. 12, 1853, when he was accidentally run over by a cart. He was a silkman and farmer.
Married Thomas Harrop December 25, 1839, at St. James Church Gawsworth, Cheshire, England.
Immigrated with Thomas from England to the U.S. in 1842, taking with them their first born child John. Martha had a total of nine children, only four of whom attained maturity. She was listed as illiterate in the 1860 census.
After the death of Thomas in 1867, Martha had financial trouble. The silk mill Thomas owned at the time of his death was undoubtedly mortgaged and she was unable to save the business. She moved the family to various addresses in West Philadelphia in the ensuing years.
