William was born to Dr. William Lincoln Bates (who was born as William Henry Carr but his mother Lucenia Howland died young and his dad Benjamin S. Carr was institutionalized and then died in 1883, so he was adopted by a relative Hannah Fowler Carr and her husband John Bates, who legally changed his name to William Lincoln Bates) and Rebecca Jane Lowie/Lewin.

Dr. Bates ran the Bates Sanitarium for 40 years in Jamestown, RI. He was a specialist in Electropathy, which became controversial.

He intends to make mining engineering his life's work and in preparation for that he may take Post- Graduate work at Columbia"
