First Lieutenant Ashby was the pilot of
U S Army Air Corps B-17G Flying Fortress
#42-31547, serving with the 749th Bomb
Squadron, 457th Bomb Group.

After departing Wendover Field, the B-17
developed engine trouble during a snowstorm
and crashed into the Cedar Mountains, about
twelve miles southwest of Delle, Utah.

Also killed were:

2nd Lt. Marvin J Bible
2nd Lt. Clarence R McRae
2nd Lt. John W Newman
T/Sgt. Joseph Barboza
S/Sgt. Robert A Timmons
