Charles Adam Bender was born about June 1873, the son of Uriah Bender and Barbara Ann Bender (nee Vasbinder). He married Bertha L. Burge, daughter of Lafayette Burge and Frances J. Burge (nee Hayes) on June 28, 1893, in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.
His step-mother mentioned in the following obituary is the former Martha Elizabeth Himes.
C. A. Bender, well known Kittanning contractor and bricklayer who died at 1:40 pm Wednesday of last week following a two weeks illness was buried Saturday afternoon.
Funeral services were held at the residence at two o'clock Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. W V Ritchie, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Following these services the body was removed to the Bender homestead in Brookville where further services were held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon.
Interment was made in the Brookville Cemetery Saturday.
Bender, who died at the age of 59, had resided in Kittanning for 30 years and was affiliated with several organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias of Kittanning, No. 321, and a charter member of the bricklayer's union there. He was familiarly called 'Chief' due to his former association with local Red Men's organizations. He had been in faiing health for several years.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha L. Bender, two sisters, Mrs. James Yeoman, North Carolina, and Mrs. Fred Schroder, New Jersey, one brother, Harry Bender, whose address is not known and his stepmother, Mrs. Uriah Bender of Brookville.
Mr. Bender was known here to a number of people. He laid brick here on the Mrs. F. P. Williams home and the Andrews Theatre.
