Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in New York City in 1828, before the Civil War he was employed as a Merchant, banker, and United States Customs Official. He enlisted in the Union Army in May of 1861, joining Company G of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry, and was appointed as Captain and commander of the company. He was promoted to Major in February of 1862, and was wounded on April 19th, 1862 at Camden, North Carolina. He was discharged in May of 1863, and on May 29th, 1863 was appointed as Colonel of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry, which he was attempting to organize. Before he could complete the organization though he was wounded on July 15th/16th, 1863 during the draft riots in New York City, and was unable to complete the organization. With the men he had assembled he was mustered into the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry in October of 1863, and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment. In October of 1864 he was retired to the Veteran Reserve Corps, and was appointed as Captain of the 4th Company, 2nd Veteran Reserve Corps Battalion. On April 12th, 1866 he resigned his commission, but before his resignation he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers. After the war he was elected as the commander of the New York Grand Army of the Republic in 1874, and later served as the Senior Vice Commander-in-chief of the G.A.R.
