DURHAM — Stephen Francis Casey (affectionately know as "Gug" by his grandchildren), 97, of Durham, formerly of Boston, Mass. died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010.
He was born June 5, 1913, in Boston, Mass. to the late Thomas and Annie O'Reilly Casey.
He married Lillian Clare DeViney on Sept. 22, 1940. They lived in Jamaica Plain, Mass. for 37 years, retiring to Durham, where he lived for 33 years.
Mr. Casey worked for the MBTA in Boston, Mass. for 30 years. He was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Jamaica Plain and The Holy Name Society, as well as the Knights of Columbus (Council 120).
As a young man, Mr. Casey excelled in baseball and basketball. He coached youth basketball for many years.
Mr. Casey sang in local parish and Knights of Columbus variety shows often accompanied on the piano by his wife, Lillian.
He was active in politics, running two times for state representative, and he served as vice chairman of the Democratic Ward Committee and as a delegate to the Massachusetts State Democratic Convention in 1954.
In his retirement, his greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, politics and sports.
He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Lillian, and his oldest son, Robert Francis Casey.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Diane and James Darr of Greenwich, Conn.; his daughter and her husband, Eileen and Don Recher, of Rye; his son and his wife, Stephen and Jane Casey of Columbus, Ohio; as well as his five grandchildren, Jason Recher, Eric Recher, Kristin Darr, Caroline Casey, Stephen Casey and a sister, Ruth Casey.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State Street, Portsmouth, N.H. and Funeral Mass on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St Theresa Church, Rye, N.H.
