The death of Dr. Arthur W. Cutler, chief of staff of the Aurelia Osborn Fox Memorial Hospital at Oneonta, and consulting surgeon of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, occurred at the Clifton Springs Sanitorium on Thursday morning of last week. Dr. Cutler was one of the leading surgeons of Central New York. He was born in Binghamton, September 24, 1870, graduated from Columbia University Medical School in 1896 and spent the following four years as interne in the General Hospital in New York City. He went to Oneonta in 1898 and had practiced his profession there since that time ... The military record of Dr. Cutler began when the United States entered the World war. He then volunteered for service and was mustered in on June 1, 1917, with rank of first lieutenant. He was made major in September of that year and for a short time was in command of Field Hospital No. 30, at Fort Ontario. He was then transferred to Camp Merritt at Tenafly, N. J., where he was made commander of the base hospital. In May, 1918, he was transferred to the great base hospital at Camp Mils, L. I. He was made lieutenant-colonel on November 1, 1918, and received honorable discharge in April, 1919, returning at the end of two years of service to resume his practice in that city. Dr. Cutler is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Nellie A. Backus of Smithport, Pa., to whom he was married September 11, 1899, and by one sister, Mrs. J. K. Thomas of Binghamton. He leaves also one aunt, Mrs. Philander Cutler of Binghamton and three cousins, Miss Frances Cutler of Binghamton and Mrs. Henry Ristine and Mrs. Gerald Shannon of Seattle, Wash. The funeral was held at the First Presbyterian church of which he was a member on Saturday morning, the Rev. Dr. J. C. Russell, the pastor, officiating, after which the body was taken to Troy for cremation. The services at the church were in charge of the Oneonta Post of the American Legion.
