Anchorage Daily News (AK) - August 28, 2002 Deceased Name: Former Alaskan HAZEL LOUISE PLUMMER 93, died quietly of natural causes Aug. 17, 2002, at a care facility in Brookings, Ore.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings. Private interment will be at Malta Cemetery in Montana.
Mrs. Plummer was born Jan. 27, 1909, in West Plains, Mo., to Monroe and Birdie Marshal. She completed high school in Lincoln, Neb., with honors. She played basketball in high school.
She married George Litty, and they had three children. During the Depression, they separated and she became a single working mom. She eventually become a manager for Safeway. When war broke out, she worked in Bay area shipyards and became a certified welder. She then returned to work as a retail clerk.
During this time, she married George Plummer, and they had two boys. They were married for more than 45 years. She engineered many projects for George to complete. They traveled the western United States doing contract work.
Mrs. Plummer started the first Quick Stop Drive through on Highway 99W in Willows, Calif. After selling this business, she became a real estate broker and traveled to Alaska in 1951. She relocated to Southeast Alaska in 1957. Becoming landowners in the territory, she and her husband became partners with Umnak Co. They built a ranch and worked on the Aleutians until 1973. They retired to Montana. There, they bought a small motel, which they later turned into apartments. They traveled to Gold Beach, Ore., to help their son operate his business. She obtained a funeral director's license to facilitate his business and took care of Gold Beach Funeral Home seasonally.
Mr. Plummer died in 1992, and Mrs. Plummer moved to Brookings and purchased a home. She later moved to Ocean View Rest Home.
Her family wrote: "During her 93 years, Hazel was a supportive wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We will miss Hazel's inspiration and wisdom."
Mrs. Plummer is survived by her sons, Paul Litty, George Litty and Gregory Plummer; daughter, Lois Eidam; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
