Previously served with an unreported rank in Captain John W Mears company, 45th battalion North Carolina home guard. Enlisted in this company (Callahan's company 8th regiment North Carolina senior reserves) at Whiteville at age 48, May 2nd 1864, for the war. On page 355 is the following concerning Captain David Callahan's Company. The company was raised in Bladen and Columbus Counties and was organized in Elizabethtown on May 14th 1864, as Captain David Callahan's company, Reserve Force, Senior Class. It became a company of the 8th regiment North Carolina senior reserves when the regiment was reorganized on December 4th 1864. The regiment was reorganized again on December 22nd 1864. This company was probably assigned a designation at that time according to “Clarke Regiments 4:107”, it was Company D, but wartime evidence is inconclusive. [It was aka 73rd N. C. Infantry Regiment, Senior Reserves]
