husband of Sarah Ann Best

In the North Carolina troops 1861 - 1865 roster page number 360 has him in Callahan's company 8th regiment North Carolina senior reserves. It reads: Ward, Joshua H., private born in South Carolina in March 1816. Resided in Columbus County and was by occupation a farmer. Previously served with an unreported rank in Captain John W Mears company, 45th battalion North Carolina home guard. Enlisted in this company (Callahan's company 8th regiment North Carolina senior reserves) at Whiteville at age 48, May 2nd 1864, for the war. He was hospitalized at Wilmington on October 6th, in 1864, with remittent bilious fever. Returned to duty on October 13th, 1864. No further records. He survived the war.

On page 355 is the following concerning Captain David Callahan's Company. The company was raised in Bladen and Columbus Counties and was organized in Elizabethtown on May 14th 1864, as Captain David Callahan's company, Reserve Force, Senior Class. It became a company of the 8th regiment North Carolina senior reserves when the regiment was reorganized on December 4th 1864. The regiment was reorganized again on December 22nd 1864. This company was probably assigned a designation at that time according to “Clarke Regiments 4:107”, it was Company D, but wartime evidence is inconclusive. [It was aka 73rd N. C. Infantry Regiment, Senior Reserves]

NOTE: The application for the VA headstone was ordered in August 1930 and shipped in September. In scrutinizing the application it can be deciphered that the VA wrote the 8th and also referred to it as 73rd.
