Long-time Port Arthur resident Mary Sue Oliver Gorin, age 83 went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 9, 2012 after losing her battle with congestive heart failure.
She was a retired Port Arthur ISD teacher who received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Lamar University.
Mary Sue came to Port Arthur, Texas from her native Mississippi in 1946 to work as a secretary at the Gulf Oil refinery, where she met and married Raymond Henry Gorin born 13 July 1923, a chemical engineer and native of Port Arthur who graduated from Rice University. They had two sons, James Oliver Gorin born 5 Feb 1954, who resides in Virginia and Gordon Lee Oliver born 1 Nov. 1959, who resides in Pennsylvania. Mary's grandchildren include John, Susan, Jessica and great grandchild Sadie.
In her younger years, Mary played the piano and organ in church and taught piano lessons. She was an excellent musician and an avid member of the Adult Choir at First Baptist Port Arthur for many years.
Teaching reading was her passion as a teacher and her Master's degree was concentrated in that discipline. She counted doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers and successful people from all walks of life among her many former pupils, and they would often greet her in public with gratitude for the good influence of her teaching.
Mary Sue Gorin leaves behind a great many friends of all ages who witnessed her quick wit, warm smile and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. We mourn the loss of her presence, but today she walks in paradise, free from all suffering, care and concern. May God be praised.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Levingston Funeral Home, 5601 39th Street, Groves, Texas, at 2pm in the afternoon, with visitation beginning at 1pm.
A brief graveside service for family and close friends will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery immediately following the chapel service.
She is the daughter of Marvin E. Oliver and Lucille G. Oliver.
