Hall of Fame Professional Football Player. He was a star halfback with the Green Bay Packers from 1941 to 1944, and from 1946 to 1952. He was given the nickname the "Grey Ghost" while playing college ball at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He was the third player in pro football history to rush for 1,000 yards in one season when he gained 1,052 yards for the Packers in 1949. He missed the 1945 season due to military service in first the United States Navy, then the United States Army during World War II. He was the second member of the Packers to have his number retired. His 4,197 career yard gained ranks fourth in Packers' team history. In 1974 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
