Grandson James M. Hurst Jr. :
"A decimating outbreak of the Spanish Flu starting at the close of WWI killed nearly a third of the population of Social Circle and Monroe. Overworked Dr. Paul had to take up residence at a downtown hotel (turned hospital) to better access his patients. Dr. Hurst's health soon began to fail and, finally, he contracted the virus himself. Dying of double pneumonia, it is said he just laid down to rest after his medical duties and never rose again. Paul left a houseful of children and a wife who, in six years, would also succumb, this time to cancer. Dr. Paul's inheritance and investments over the years were drastically depleted by Nov. 21st, 1923 ....... many of Dr. Paul's patients forgot about their debts after his death."
