| Birth: | Apr. 21, 1809 Loretto Essex County Virginia, USA | | Death: | Jul. 18, 1887 Lloyds Essex County Virginia, USA |  Democrat congressman from Virginia. He served two nonconsecutuve terms in the House of Representatives from 1837-1843 and from 1845-1847. While in the House of Representatives, he served as Speaker of the House from 1839-1841. He also served in the US Senate from 1847 until he was expelled in 1861 for supporting the Confederate rebellion. From 1861-1862, he served as the confederate Secretary of State in Jefferson Davis' cabinet and from 1874-1880, he served as the State Treasurer of Virginia. (bio by: Tim Crutchfield)
