FAMILY NAME
As with many early families that settled in America, the spelling of surnames were varied. The original German spelling of Göhn evolved into other variations, such as Coon, Koon, Goan, Kuhn, Kohn and Goon.

People wrote the name the way it was pronounced. Lloyd B. Gohn, author of the book "A Historical Sketch of the Gohn Family in Canada" writes on page 3 that "In Pennsylvania to this day the name "Gohn" is pronounced "Goon"". Census recorders and others wrote the name the way they understood it and sometimes the alternate spelling was carried on.

OBITUARY
Mexico Ledger, Mexico, MO, Thursday, July 23, 1896, p.4

Henry Coon Dead
Henry Coon fell asleep in death in the early morning of July 10, while his spirit, we believe, awoke to a beautiful everlasting heavenly morning. Brother Coon was born in the State of Maryland, Nov. 6, 1816, and was, therefore, 79 years, 8 months and 7 days old. He came with his parents to Ohio and later to Illinois. His first wife was Miss Elizabeth Bumgardner, to whom one daughter was born, her mother dying when she was two years old. Afterwards he married Miss Mary A. Snider, March 18, 1849. Of this marriage two boys and six girls were born, four of whom are dead. Those living are Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Sidenstricker *, Mrs. Hardin and Mrs. Mary Saunders.

Sister Coon passed away over two years ago, and now their bodies lie buried in New Hope cemetery, peacefully sleeping until the resurrection morn, when their mortal bodies shall put on immortality. Brother Coon was a consistent member of the Methodist Church for years, and only two weeks ago last Sunday attended church services at Groves Chapel. Many hours of his last days did he spend reading the Bible. We sympathize with the loved ones who mourn his loss, but not as those who have no hope.

One loss on earth,
Its pain, its sorrow and its toll to share;
One less the pilgrim's cross to bear;
One more the crown of ransomed saints to wear,
At home in heaven.

Another thought to brighten cloudy days;
Another theme of thankfulness and praise,
Another link on high our souls to raise,
To home and heaven.

One more at home.
That home where separation cannot be;
That home where none are missed eternally.
Lord Jesus, grant us all a place with thee,
At home in heaven.
