| Birth: | Feb. 16, 1842 Stirling, Scotland | | Death: | Oct. 1, 1901 Berks County Pennsylvania, USA |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Sterlingshire, Scotland, he began his Civil War service with a commission of Captain and commander of Company A, 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on August 17, 1862. He then rose steadily in rank, being promoted to Major on December 8, 1862, Lieutenant Colonel on March 10, 1864, and to Colonel and commander on July 3, 1865. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". Honorably mustered out on July 10, 1865, he would go on to a successful law career, culminating in his service as a an Alabama State Representative (1872-1874) and a United States Federal Judge in Alabama (1875-1901).
